This painting depicts the home of Lemuel A. Newland (1798-1878), who was born in Stillwater, New York. His father Joseph Newland (1755-1848), was born in Bristol, Massachusetts and fought in the American Revolutionary War. Joseph Newland and his wife, Sibyl Austen (1757-1822) and their family were one of the first families to arrive in the town of Kelloggsville, New York in 1803. Lemuel was first married to Betsey (d. 1861) and the couple had three children. Lemuel married secondly Flora B. Smith (1808-1878) in 1864. At the time that this painting was executed, Lemuel was the head of the household, having inherited the house from his father in 1848.
