PROPERTY OF A PRINCELY FAMILY The following twelve lots belong to a series of watercolours after old master pictures, presented by Czar Alexander II to his daughter Maria Alexandrowna at her marriage in 1874 to Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, later Duke of Coburg, who was the second son of Queen Victoria. From there they have come down by descent to the present owner. All are executed by the Viennese Michael Stohl, who was trained at the Art Academy in Vienna under Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld. In the 1840s he travelled in Italy, as is reported in G.K. Nagler, Neues allgemeines Künstler-Lexicon, 1847, XVII, p.396, where he painted in Rome the portrait of the Russian Grand Duchess Maria Nicolajewa, her husband the Duke of Leuchtenburg and their children. Having won the protection of the Russian imperial family, he was afterwards appointed court artist in Saint Petersburg. In this capacity he painted over 800 copies after old master pictures.
