Lot Essay

The present lot is a key for the oil picture by Ferneley in the Collection of the 14th Earl of Kintore. Ferneley mentions Keith Hall in correspondence to his wife dated 28 August 1824 saying that he had "arrived at the Glen of Dye at dusk...First thing on Sunday morning I made a sketch of a beautiful one-arched bridge that is over the Dye River...Have had more fun than I ever had [and] am anxious to begin to paint. Have got several fresh subjects for pictures of another class of sporting.".
