The original, oil on canvas, 108 x 86 cm, is in the Louvre, Paris. The painting, executed in the early 1770s, was first exhibited during the Salon of 1777. As was recognised by Greuze's audience without difficulty, the broken jar (La Cruche Cassée) alludes to the lost virginity of the girl.
