A RARE THREE-COLOR LACQUER SQUARE BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER GILT-FILLED INSCRIBED MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
Of cushion form, the flat top of the cover finely carved through the red, dark green and ochre layers with two five-clawed dragons confronted on a shou medallion as they leap wildly amidst clouds above a band of waves crashing against rocks, within decorative borders, the sides of the cover and box carved with panels of the Eight Daoist Emblems (anbaxian) alternating with the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang) at the corners, all reserved on a ground of cell diaper, the interior of the cover with a four-character gilt-filled inscribed mark, shuanglong baohe (double dragon treasure box)

Lot Essay

A circular tiered box, also bearing incised and gilded six-character Qianlong and four-character Shuanglong baohe marks was included in the Hong Kong O.C.S. exhibition, 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer, Art Gallery, Chinese University of Hong Kong, 24 September-21 November 1993, pp. 148-9, no. 77. However, the cover of the tiered box is carved with two dragons confronted around a pearl as opposed to a shou character, as on the present lot.
