YONGZHENG REN ZI CYCLICAL DATE CORRESPONDING TO 1732 AND OF THE PERIOD
Heavily cast and of barrel form, the sides decorated with four segmented panels of rows of pointed bosses (mei) alternating with plain bands, separated by four vertical panels, two left plain and the two narrower panels inscribed in outlined characters with inscriptions, the flat top surmounted by an openwork handle

Lot Essay

One inscription, Yongzheng ren zi, may be translated, 'made in a spring month in the ren zi year of the reign of Yongzheng', corresponding to 1732, the other inscription may be read, Wen Miao bian zhong, Nan Chang gong, 'Nan Chang made this bell for temple use.'
