A bronze figure of a Teaching Buddha
Indonesia, Central Java, 10th century
Solidly cast and seated in dhyanasana on a low double-lotus base with crisply pointed petals, his hands at his heart in dharmachakra mudra and the left holding the hem of the diaphanous sanghati elegantly draped across his arm, the contours of the body visible beneath the folds, his face with gently puckered lips, heavy-lidded eyes and arched brows centered by a raised urna, his elongated earlobes pendant to the shoulders, his hair arranged in tight knots over the ushnisha and backed by a perforated halo with pointed finial
