A red sandstone figure of a standing Vishnu
India, Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan, 12th century
Finely carved in tribhanga stance with the right foot completely turned to the side, his upper right hand clutching a mace, a srivastava in relief on his chest, adorned with beaded jewelry at the waist, multiple necklaces and disk earrings flanking the expressive face, with almond-shaped eyes and bow-shaped lips, the hair incised in waves surmounted by a tapered headdress decorated with scrolling foliage
