R. Morgan, curator of Chepstow Castle, has kindly provided us with the following information about the present lot:

The view depicted was painted from the lower reaches of the River Wye, south of the town Chepstow, South Wales. The actual situation corresponds with the painting, with the exception for the railway tunnel, which seems to stem from the artist's imagination.
The painting was executed somewhere between 1850 and 1864 when Koster spent a holiday at Hardwick Hill House, the home of the second Count du Bois de Ferrieres in this period. The Count was a collector of Dutch and Belgian 17th and 19th Century paintings and his collection was donated to the Cheltenham Art Gallery in 1898 by his son.
