Lot Essay

In 1880 Gabriël explored the peat-fields and polders near Kampen together with the native artist W.B. Tholen, a pupil of Gabriël.
In the following decennium Gabriël repeatedly painted the subject, eventually culminating in the monumental 'Kamper Veenderij', 1890 (Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, inv. no. 2-1890). The present painting may also be compared with the painting 'Vroege Morgen', 1880 (Groninger Museum) and the watercolour of the same subject (Teylers Museum, Haarlem, inv. no. DD 10).
