Lot Essay

The subject of beachscenes is a new approach by the artist to broaden his scope of subject-matter (cf. cat.De Haagse School, 1983 p. 282) is search for lighter and brighter compositions.
Weissenbruch began to paint beachscenes in 1887 when he allready reached the age of sixty-three. Various versions of the Scheveningen beachscenes are recorded of which the one in the Gemeentemuseum The Hague and one in a private collection, The Netherlands (cf. cat. De Schilders van Tachtig, 1991, p, 323) are the most renowned.
