The present lot was executed in 1878 as a preparatory study for the painting L'arrivée au Chateau, wich was exhibited in 1883 at the Exposition Nationale, Paris (no. 501). It was acquired by William H. Vanderbilt and sold in his sale, Parke Bernet, New York, 18-19 April 1945, lot 132.
