Lot Essay

In January 1921, Jones joined the Ditchling Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic, founded in 1919 by Hilary Pepler and Eric Gill as a religious fraternity for craftsmen. It was here that Jones learnt wood engraving and the influence is seen in the simplicity of line in this work. Jones spent Christmas of 1924 at Capel-y-ffin with Gill and his family. It was probably at this time that Jones produced the current work and also lot 52.
