Lot Essay

In a letter to a previous owner, dated 17 June 1980, Keith Clements writes about the present work: 'I think it must have been one of the first he painted after moving into the Vale of Health Hotel Studios, now demolished, in the autumn of 1911, and where he had a studio until the late twenties' (Private correspondance, 1980). A label on the stretcher is inscribed in the hand of Richard Carline.
