Lot Essay

The present work was drawn when Self taught at the Norwich School of Art. A similiar work is the British Council collection. It is reminiscent of Peacock and White Peacock from the Power and Beauty Suite, 1968. Some of the images from the series were taken from a series of magazines entitled Hutchinson's Animals of All Countries. 'He [Self] explained that in the Power and Beauty suite he aimed to: "present in an immediate way part of the imagery about which I work and am motivated ..."' (see Exhibition catalogue, Colin Self Art in the Nuclear Age, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, 2008, p. 78).

We are very grateful to Colin Self for his assistance cataloguing this lot.
