Floris Arntzenius, born on Java, Indonesia, came to Holland in 1875 and studied first at the Amsterdam Academy, alongside Breitner, Isaac Israels, Jan Veth and Willem Witsen. The effects of this early training are always apparent. Although Arntzenius does not settle in The Hague untill 1892, his early work paradoxically consists of typical Hague School landscapes, and after 1890 turned to the urban views and street-scenes for wich he is best known, and wich are often reminiscent of Breitner and Israels.
