Lot Essay

The signature reads ya Baqir al-'ulum 1145 (O you who are well-versed in knowledge) one of the signatures used by this artist. Muhammad Baqir was a pupil of 'Ali Ashraf whose activity is well-attested from the 1730s onwards, with some works dated earlier. The lacquer works of Muhammad Baqir almost invariably shows compositions with flowers and birds. Five examples of lacquer bear dates between 1710 and 1781 AD and it is therefore tempting to believe that two Muhammad Baqirs may have existed, the second probably being from the same family and referring in his signature to his illustrious ancestor. One pen-box signed by Muhammad Baqir and dated 1728-9 AD is in the Nasser D. Khalili collection (no.LAQ21, N. D. Khalili, B. W. Robinson, T. Stanley, Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, p.114, fig.75)
