The rolling hills and farmland, north-west of Toronto, is the setting for the beautiful country home of this well-known Canadian collector and philanthropist, who passed away in 2008. Her daughter is following her mother's wishes in dispersing her collection of paintings, fine furniture, ceramics and objets d'art. The collector saw herself as a custodian of these pieces for her lifetime and wanted others to share her love of art and antiques by being able to bid on them at auction, as she herself had done. A keen student of the arts, the collector was a graduate of Christie's Education in London when it first started. This experience nurtured her interest in all aspects of the decorative arts and the English country-house style, which is reflected in the pieces she purchased. The house, surrounded by woodland and nestled in one corner of a larger property devoted to horse-breeding, echoes another strong interest of the collector, which can be seen by the many references to horses in her choice of paintings and objects. The collection was quietly built up over the last two decades. The house resonated with warmth and the obvious enjoyment of her surroundings. This very private individual was a highly serious collector who had a profound influence on the Canadian arts scene, and on the many lives she touched. Each with a caned tablet crestrail above X-shaped back, the arms with scrolled terminals, above a cream leather squab cushion, on sabre legs, overall with parcel-gilt banding, both stamped 'W' to underside of back seatrail, one inscribed '# 126' to inside of back seatrail, redecorated, the seats formerly caned (2)
