Lot Essay
A chair from this set, identified as from the Earl of Lathom's collection, is illustrated in M. Harris & Sons, A Catalogue and Index of Old Furniture and Works of Art, part II, n.d. (circa 1930), p. 238, fig. F18187. The 3rd Earl of Lathom was a dilettante renowned for his passion for the theater and patronage of the young Noel Coward. In the early 1920s, his lavish parties were legendary, hosted for a group of 'Bright Young Things' (including Coward) at his ancestral estate Blythe Hall in Lancashire. Upon his young death at 35, the earldom ended.
A pair from the set was sold, the property of a Gentleman, Christie's, London, 28 May 1964, lot 91 (the single photographed chair with exposed plain armrests). A chest-on-stand with identical feet is illustrated in G. Beard & J. Goodison, English Furniture 1500-1840, 1987, p. 71, fig 2.
