A LARGE PAIR OF VIENNA STYLE COBALT-BLUE GROUND VASES, COVERS AND STANDS
LATE 19TH/20TH CENTURY, BLACK PAINTED NUMERALS, PURPLE DECORATOR'S MARKS FOR FRANZ DÖRFL, SIGNED F. DÖRFL
Each of baluster form, the waisted neck with gilt floral ovolo on a trellis band, the body finely painted with paired continuous views, one after T. Lessi with Milton meeting Galileo, its obverse with King Ferdinand and the Protestants, the other after Munkácsy with "The Blind Milton Dictating 'Paradise Lost' to his Daughters", its obverse with Rudolf II and the alchemist John Dee, all identified in German on the underside, within beaded gilt bands and further scrollwork and flower-head medallions, on a conforming socle and base painted with further historic scenes

Tito Lessi, Italian (1858-1917)
Mihály Munkácsy, Hungarian (1844-1900)

Munkácsy's painting of the English poet John Milton and his daughters (1877-78) is located in the New York Public Library's galleries. Lessi's painting depicts the presumed 1640 meeting between Milton and Italian scientist Galileo Galilei at his farm in Arcetri following his condemnation by the Inquisition seven years earlier.
