Lot Essay

Based upon Ludovico Ariosto's 16th century poem Orlando Furioso, Carrier-Belleuse's Angélique was first exhibited in marble at the 1866 Paris Salon and subsequently at the 1867 Exposition Universelle. Until the recent discovery of the original marble, which was sold at Sotheby's, London, 20 April 2005, lot 131, Angélique was known only to be exhibited in terracotta reductions, of which the present lot is an excellent example.
