Lot Essay

Cf. J. Bourriau, Pharaohs and Mortals, Egyptian art in the Middle Kingdom, Cambridge, 1988, pp. 88-89, no. 68 for similar. Bourriau comments "The extraordinary eyes ... are enlarged human eyes beneath which are markings taken from a falcon's head. These markings are one of the most powerful symbols in Egyptian religious iconography, and represent wholeness, goodness and healing".
