Lot Essay

In 1813 Gillows of Lancaster supplied four related dressing-tables to William Powlett, 2nd Baron Bolton (1782-1850) for Hackwood Park, Hampshire at a cost of 8 16s 6d each. They were sold by the late Viscount Camrose, Hackwood Park, Christie's house sale, 20-22 April 1998, lots 356, 358, 359 and 360. Gillows supplied a closely related 'Mahogany Looking Glass frame for plate' to the 5th Duke of Rutland (1778-1857) in February 1821 for 4.7.10. The sketch is illustrated in their Estimate Sketch Book for that year, no. 3086 (now in Westminster City Library).
