Lot Essay

This centrepiece is closely related to an example by Pierre-Philippe Thomire, maître-fondeur in 1772, certainly conceived to form part of a surtout de table and standing on a mirrored plateau with further decorative items. A related centerpiece executed by Thomire, with maidens standing on a closely related concave-sided base is in the Musée Marmottan, Paris (H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p.382, fig. 5.16.2), while a further example attributed to Thomire and formerly the property of King Umberto II of Italy, was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 9 December 2004, lot 42 (£77,675 with premium).
