FRANCIACORTA

Beyond the glittering fashions of Milan and above the luxurious tranquility of Lake Garda lie the rolling hills of Franciacorta. On the limestone soil formed by glacial mountains eons before rise up cultivars familiar to Champagne lovers: Pinot Noir (Nero, to the locals) and Chardonnay with a bit of Pinot Bianco planted as well. The eponymous wine mimics Champagne methods, but the resulting sparkler is unique to its region--it is lighter, fresher version of its French brethren with aging potential not often available for enjoyment. Bellavista, founded by Vittorio Moretti, is the region's leader in quality and production. The Moretti Riserva is the top of the line, made only in exceptional years and held for 7 years until release. Also presented here are two vintages of the Gran Cuvée, including two of the twelve jeroboams produced from 1995.
