Studies of furniture from Ensor's family were common within the artist's oeuvre between 1885 and 1886. This sketch is a detail of the dresser in his drawing room. Examples of his important works featuring such domestic details include Le meuble hanté of 1885 and Mon portrait triste et somptueux of 1886.
