Lot Essay

Gessar Khan is a legendary hero who Buddhists believe would return to earth and destroy all evil. Since his childhood, Nicholas Roerich had heard the story of Gessar Khan and frequently painted many symbols from the legend such as Gessar Khan's castle, sword, and arrow.

We are grateful to Gvido Trepsa and The Roerich Museum, New York, for their assistance with the cataloguing of the present lot.
