Lot Essay

Very little is known about this artist except that he was the Dean of the Middelburg painters guild of Saint Luke in the years 1635 and 1637.

The landscape in the present work does seem to recall the paintings of Wijnants' Middelburg contemporary Mattheus Molanus (d. 1645) whereas the large scale figures and composition are more reminiscent of the Haarlem painter Jan Miense Molenaer and Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot from Utrecht.
