A similar painting by Ross of A Meeting at Clifton and Rawcliffe Ings, York, 1709, is in the National Horseracing Museum, Newmarket (see A. Ellis, et al., Oil Paintings in Public Ownership in Suffolk, London, 2005, p. 213, illustrated).
The artist's dates are unknown and the present work, as with the National Horseracing Museum picture, appears to date from some time before his recorded activity (from 1729, presumably based on the earliest of his dated works).
