The floral-patterned pale blue silk seat above a Vitruvian-scroll frieze centred by a lion mask, on cabriole legs headed by a maiden mask, on claw-and-ball feet

Lot Essay

The stool's vestal heads relate to those of a suite of chairs in the possession of the Duke of Buccleuch, illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, 'The Dictionary of English Furniture', London, rev. ed., 1954, pl. XV, as well as a broad 'easy chair' supplied to Sir Basil Dixwell, Bt. (d. 1750), for Broome Park, Kent. It is possible that this stool once formed part of the Broome Park suite.
