Lot Essay

The legs of this mid 18th Century dining-table are headed by satyr masks with pointed ears above carved scrolling acanthus. 18th Century Irish furniture is well-known for its weird and wonderful carving, particularly satyr masks. Their presence on this table is probably a legacy of French and English gilt-gesso tables form the early 18th Century. The claw feet extend into further carved acanthus that meets with ribbon-hung flowers on the leg.
