Lot Essay

Sligo Bog was painted by Hill when staying at Classiebawn Castle, Lord Mountbatten's holiday home on the Sligo coast near Mullaghmore Head. Although influenced by the Romantic landscape tradition of artists such as Constable a bold, distinctive style is apparent in his work. Ben Bulden, beyond, is given distance by employing a thin wash, while the burnt and raw umber of the foreground is scraped through to reveal the wooden panel, effecting a certain ruggedness to the landscape.
