Buttevant, a medieval market town north of Cork, derives its French name Botavaunt (Forward Bastion), from a Norman castle built by the Barry family around 1200 AD to protect the town during the Middle Ages. The remnants of the original castle lie below the 19th Century structure that replaced it, on the direction of Sir James Anderson (1792-1861) who also built a barracks and a mill in the area.
