A LARGE SILK EMBROIDERED HANGING SCROLL OF BUDDHA SAKYAMUNI
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-95)
Shown seated in padmasana and with hands in vitarka mudra, wearing robes detailed with cloud scrolls, draped over the shoulders in such a way as to expose the chest which is centred by a necklace, the face with a serene expression before a radiating halo behind, seated on lotus atop an elaborate throne, all below a headdress with the eight hanging Buddhist emblems, the details to the robes and headdress finely picked out in silver and gold couching, on a cream coloured ground
66½ x 37 in. (168.8 x 94 cm.), mounted with fine silk embroidered borders

Compare the embroidered hanging depicting a seated figure of the Sakyamuni Buddha flanked by two attendants in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Kexiao te zhan tu (A Special Exhibition of Embroidery), 1992, pp 80-83, no. 27 which is dated to the Qing dynasty. See also the embroidery of Amitayus bearing a Qianlong inscription and dated to the Qianlong period, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 52 - Embroidered Pictures, Hong Kong, 2005, p. 118. no. 64
