Lot Essay

According to Dr. Ila Weiss, Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire: A Study is part of a series that is likely based upon sketches from nature that Gifford completed in southern New Hampshire in August and September 1858. The largest documented painting in the series is #231 in the Gifford Memorial Catalogue titled Lake Sinapee [sic] (oil on canvas, 12 x 22 inches, location unknown). The present work is a half-size study for this catalogued but otherwise unknown painting.

A letter from the recognized expert on the artist, Dr. Ila Weiss, accompanies this lot.
