Lot Essay

In 1628 Keirincx moved from Antwerp to Utrecht, where he stayed until 1636 when he settled in Amsterdam. During the Utrecht years Poelenburgh painted the figures in his landscapes, a collaboration recorded by A. Houbraken in De Groote Schouwburg, 1718, I, p.130; typical works of collaboration are nymphs in a landscape of circa 1630, in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Musuem in Brunswick (R.Klessmann, Die holländische Gemälde, 1983, p.109, n.181, with ill.) and the Baptism of Christ, of 1635, offered at Fievez, Brussels, 16 June 1931, lot 75 (photograph recorded in the RKD). The composition of the present picture repeats the painting of 1634 in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich, inv.n.723 (recorded in the RKD).
