Lot Essay

The present lot is a horizontal version of the picture, on canvas 134 x 122 cm, signed and dated 1683, sold at Christie's New York, 11 January 1989, lot 129, with ill. (T.H.Fokker, Jan Siberechts, 1931, p.98, fig.38).

The artist was already an established master in Flanders before coming to England in 1673, supposedly at the invitation of George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, who had met him in Antwerp. In England he became well known for his country house views. He also painted landscapes, always with a topographical content. Fokker, op. cit, p.98, has tentatively identified the church in the present lot as the one in Edensor near Chatworth, Derbyshire.
