Lot Essay

Beck (loc. cit., 1987) dates this circa 1630. Van Goyen may have used it when painting his very similar Landscape with travellers on a road along a haystack and an Inn in the City of York Art Gallery (Beck, op. cit., 1973, II, no. 1009, illustrated p. 454) which is dated 1632. Like in the previous lot, the diagonal is well used.
