Lot Essay

From a series of drawings of comparable composition, format and technique, partly etched by the artist, Variae campestrum fantasiae... (B. 1-24). Three of these were sold, Bassenge, Berlin, 3 November 1970, lot 346; the preliminary study for B. 14 was sold, Sotheby's, London, 23 March 1971, lot 88, and the study for B. 2 was with A. Stein, exhibited in London, 1972, no. 125, all now in the Fondation Custodia, Paris. The study for B. 5 was sold, Bassenge, Berlin, 16 May 1972, lot 268, while seven more were with C.G. Boerner, Düsseldorf, Neue Lagerliste 72, 1980, no. 9.
