Lot Essay

Contrary to what has been assumed until recently, drawings from this period must have often been executed with blank margins, separated from the drawing by ink or chalk framing lines. These margins have, mostly in the 18th Century, been removed when the drawings were mounted, and only a small number of 17th Century drawings survive that still have the original margin like the present lot. Robert-Jan te Rijdt is planning to write an article on this subject.
