Lot Essay

Born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, William Joy was the elder of the two Joy brothers who both painted maritime watercolour scenes. Joy was fortunate to attract the patronage of Captain Thomas Manby, R.N., a wealthy collector with an estate in Norfolk. Joy exhibited at both the Royal Academy and the British Institution and he is represented in museums across the country, including the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich.
