In this, one of his largest watercolours, De Beijer portrayed a city already popular among many 17th Century artists travelling along the Rhine, the sight of which has not much altered over the centuries. Romers (op. cit., nos. 879 and 1102) lists views of similar size of Haarlem (dated 1746) and Delft, indicating that this may have been part of a series in this unusual format.
