Lot Essay

William III died on 8 March 1702. The inscription of '1701' on the gold-mounted memorial miniature of the ruler in Garter Robes is possibly the result of confusion caused by the late 17th Century conversion from the Julian 'Old Style' Calendar to the Gregorian 'New Style' Calendar.
