Lot Essay

The ormolu-enriched table was designed to accompany a fireside Grecian-sofa with its Ionic-scrolled and plinth-supported pilasters ornamented in the French/antique fashion. The same patterned pilasters featured on a yew-veneered table formerly in the collection of Frances C. Albee; but, whereas the present table's ribbon-banded top is embellished with 'buhl'-inlaid paterae, the latter table's ribbon-band was entirely 'buhl'-inlaid in the Louis Quatorze fashion (sold Sotheby's New York, 8/9 December 1959, lot 397).
