Dutch artist Gerald van der Kaap counts as one of the originators of the use of new media within the visual arts. He has studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten St. Joost, Breda. From 1980 until 1989 he worked as an editor and publisher for different magazines. He was a pioneer in digital image processing, and subsequently became known for his ingenious digital manipulation of photographic and film images. He explores the technical, visual and communicative possibilities of new media within the context of the visual arts. After his first solo exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam Hover Hover, many exhibitions in (inter)national galleries and museums followed. In 2000 he exhibited at de Appel in the exhibition Fireworks. His experimental use of photography and video is also evident in his work as a VJ. He is well-known for his creation of the "automatic veejay machine". His work is represented in several collections, such as the Museum Folkwang Essen, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Huis Marseille stichting voor fotografie, Amsterdam, Montevideo/Time Based Arts, Amsterdam, the Singer Museum, Laren and the Rabo Art Collection. The artist has been awarded the Capi-Lux Alblas prize in 1996 and he won the Singer Price for his oeuvre in 2007.
