Lot Essay

This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

In his work Brussels-based video artist Sven Augustijnen explores the relations between fiction and reality and plays with the expectations of the viewer. He draws from a great variety of techniques and genres like portraits, docu-soap, human-interest, fake documentaries and home movies. Sven Augustijnen studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunst in Antwerp, the Hoger Instituut Sint-Lukas in Brussels and the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. His films take us deep into the Belgium of today and that of the past. He exposes the reality as a complex and problematic subject. With his films he investigates the grey area between reportage, research documentary and 'docudrama', and walks the thin line between revealing and covering up. He had his first solo exhibition at Gallery Jan Mot, Brussels in 2002 and now in 2009 at the Ernst Museum, Budapest and Tate Modern, London. He participated in group exhibitions like Bevreemdende Verkenningen, Sint-Lukas Gallery, Brussels (2005); Brussels Topologies, Argos, Brussels (2005) and Rencontres Urbaines, La Vilette, Paris (2000). His films have been on show at various international festivals. He showed the video L'école des pickpockets in de Appel in 2002 in Cinema Sounds Synergy V.
