Lot Essay

Edith Standen attributes this tapestry on the basis of identical borders on a tapestry illustrated in H. Göbel, Wandteppiche, Leipzig, 1923, vol. 2, pl. 165, which is recorded as having been woven by a member of the van der Goten family. Further the fountain and dog are also found in a tapestry depicting the story of Perseus and Andromeda which is a series that the van der Gotens woven in the late 17th early 18th century.

Jan van der Goten was active in Antwerp from 1670 until after 1700 while his son (?) Jacob who was active in Antwerp until 1720.
