ECKERT, Heinrich, and MONTEN, Dietrich. Der K.K. Russische Armee. Würzburg: Christian Weiss, [c.1842].
2 vols, 2° (350 x 250mm). 116 lithographs (of c.138) with the publisher's blind-stamp in the lower margin, 92 of these tipped-in, as issued, on leaves with printed captions, hand-coloured and finished with gum Arabic. (Some marginal spotting, short tears and chips in some margins, some of these with old repairs.) Loose in 20th-century cloth portfolios with flaps and ties. Provenance: Eugene Mollo (by repute) -- 'Shipman Collection' (blinstamp in the margins).
A COLLECTION OF RARE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHS OF RUSSIAN MILITARY UNIFORMS, issued as part of Saemmtliche Truppen von Europa published in parts between 1838 and 1843 in issues with either German or French captions. Due to the serial publication complete sets are notably rare. Colas remarks that 'it is difficult to establish the exact content of this collection as, apart of the numerous variants, the known examples vary in content'. The plates include a series of very useful schemata showing the various colours of the ranks in each of the regiments. Colas 935 (calling for a printed dedication to Nicholas I and a few additional plates, which may relate to another issue); Lipperheide I, Qc26. (2)
