MAKHAEV, Mikhail, John TRUSCOTT and Ivan SOKOLOV. Plan stolichnago goroda Sanktpeterburga. St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1753.

Engraved plan of St. Petersburg as issued on 9 separate, uncut sheets with deckle edges (c.505 x c.750mm to the sheet edge, for a total engraved area of c.1380 x c.2040mm), with the title and 6 pages of captions on two folio leaves. (Folded once, light soiling and short tear along edges, more pronounced in the text leaves, 2 plates with a small area of spotting).

THE RARE 'MAKHAEV' WALL-MAP OF ST. PETERSBURG, IN SHEETS AS ISSUED. A bright example, with the leaves of captions. This fine plan, one of the masterpieces of 18th-century engraving in Russia, commemorates the city's remarkable growth in the 50 years since its foundation, and was published as part of the city's first jubilee celebrations. It accompanied a series of views, but plan and views are very seldom found together. Obol'ianinov 2048; SK 5346 (ie. the variant with the slightly shorter rule on the title). (11)
