GERHARD, Eduard (1795-1867). Auserlesene Griechische Vasenbilder. Vols I-II: Götterbilder and Heroenbilder. Berlin: G. Reimer, 1840-1843.

3 volumes in 2, 4° text (335 x 260mm) and 2° plates (355 x 270mm). 206 numbered lithographic plates in black and ochre, with occasional additional hand-colouring (of 210; lacking plates 7-10), 19 of these double-page. (Occasional spotting in the text, occasional variable but mostly marginal spotting in the plates.) Text bound in 20th-century green half morocco, atlas loose in green morocco-backed chemise and slipcase.

FIRST EDITIONS of the first two volumes of Gerhard's pioneering survey, and 60 plates from volume 3. Gerhard's systematic study of the iconography of Greek vases is one of the most important contributions to the field; he first proposed the chronology still in use today. Issued serially in at least 44 parts over the course of 18 years, complete copies are distinctly rare: all 3 other copies recorded on ABPC lack either text or plates. Blackmer 677 ('well-produced'; 240 numbered plates); Borroni 11855; Brunet II, 1551 ('bel ouvrage'). (2)
